European packaging waste regulation
The European and global community will have been cognizant of growing consciousness concerning excess waste generated by packaging. This, and wider environmental concerns, has translated into legislative frameworks, both on a domestic and wider European level.
Further to these preoccupations, the European Parliament has agreed to implement a Regulation which strives to combat the issue of waste generated though packaging.
The regulation will endeavour to achieve this in several ways. It will impose a requirement that all packaging is recyclable and that packaging is reduced, with an outright ban on packaging that has an empty space of more than 40%.
Final legislation is yet to be unveiled, but is expected prior to the end of 2024.
